Is cybersecurity’s skills crisis one of its own making?
There are between three and four million vacancies for cybersecurity professionals worldwide, depending on the research you read.
Over the years, there has been plenty of discussion online, at events and conferences, and among governments and regulators, about a shortage of skilled, cybersecurity professionals.
Why, then, have multiple initiatives to close the skills gap appear to have made little impact?
CISOs and security teams report that it remains hard to fill vacancies. But applicants, especially early career cyber professionals, say it is hard to find a job.
But at the same time, the industry struggles to be more diverse, and to expand its recruitment pool.
What has gone wrong? And what can we do to fix it?
In this episode, we are joined by two guests with their own, unique perspectives on the problem.
Thom Langford is EMEA CTA at Rapid7 and a “recovering CISO“.
And Lee Munson, is principal research analyst at the Information Security Forum. Munson is himself a career changer, who moved into cybersecurity from retail.
They discuss hiring practices, certifications, what makes a good security professional, and what needs to change in the industry, with editor Stephen Pritchard.
